Names of every drama club member have been put in a bag and at yesterday's production meeting, production members have drawn up names which they have to act as 'angels' to. Actors will probably have to wait until the next rehearsal before drawing the names.

In the slip containing the name, the email address of the person is included. The aim of this game/activity is to be a 'secret angel' to your 'mortal', you can send him/her e cards, converse with him/her through a specially created e mail account acsisangels@hotmail.com getting to know them without revealing your true identity. Every member will be an angel to someone and a mortal to someone.. So as an angel.. you will send emails through the special account.. as a mortal.. u will use your own email account.. Cheem?

Really hope you all will take this opportunity to bless each other :) :) and get to know each other if you have not already done so.. Although there will not be any rehearsals in December.. use your creativity to.. DO something.

Have Fun! Any queries.. please tag on the tagboard. Alternatively, you can call this hotline.. lol no.. you can email me at bencjm@yahoo.com.sg :) No, not charlie's angels, ACSISangels!

Last Production Meeting of 2006

Date: 22nd November

Time: 10 a.m. - During this camp, we have uncovered and discovered many things about ourselves and others that we did not before. Such as the the unearthing of 2 previously un-talent spotted FEMALE world class defenders (we won 3-2), the strength of entangling ourselves, the power of the human breath, the power of tickling, the power to resist cold water in the shower and more...

Would like to thank the following mortals and Immortal.

Firstly, GOD, for providing us with such wonderful weather where we could conduct all our activities, protecting us as we participated in all e games (first aid box was not used, and the ambulance was never called) For inspiring and empowering the camp committee members to run the camp despite some challenges, difficulties.

*applause applause*

Second of all, THE ENTIRE camp committee. Luke, Rebecca, Ken Tay, Ethan, Kia Hua, who have all sacrificed a significant part of their leisure and holiday to plan this camp. They have put in a lot of effort, and I am extremely appreciative of their efforts, and im sure the rest of the drama club is too.

*applause applause*

Thirdly, THE teacher, Mr FERD, who bought us ice cream, but most importantly, (Slept in a hammock)*strikethrough, conducted the workshop, and supervised the execution of the camp. Three Cheers!

*applause applause*

Last but not least, THE CAMPERS, who sacrificed their attendance of birthday parties, and what not to attend the camp *fireworks* Birthday comes every year, YOU WONT BE IN DRAMA CLUB FOREVER.. As all were having fun kicking or playing the imaginary ball however, as Mr. Quek pointed out, the main purpose of this game should not be neglected—to help creating the awareness of space on stage by doing imaginary actions together with others. Common mistakes include catch the ball low when it is apparently served high. The key point in playing this game is to be real as if something is really there to play with, which is an essence of drama—to play what’s not there, not only objects, but even more intangible things such as emotion. Furthermore as he said, while a team in involved, coordination with others is crucial—especially when on stage, one need be conscious of what others are doing, of how his own actions would affect theirs and of how the overall effect would be. However he also warned us of the danger of over-doing which occurs at the point where the audience notices the fakeness in action. There is a distinct difference between pretending and acting.

Members were then split into 2 groups, the first group was for those intending to try out in the auditions and the second group was for those who were not interested in trying out for the auditions.

The group intending to try out in the auditions was further subdivided into 2 groups, headed by Melissa and Reuben + Mei Cen who rehearsed the lines with them and evaluated them, giving them valuable pointers and comments.

The second group was split into 2 groups, costumes and others. The costumes team headed by Charleen sketched out their draft costume designs while the ‘others’ team headed by myself (Benjamin Chan), discussed several issues.

One was welfare. We brainstormed of the possible problems/ concerns that could crop out during the production and thought of measures that could be implemented to avoid the problems from occurring.

Concerns
1. Logging of CAS, lack of service hours
2. Academic Deadlines
3. Refreshments (rather, the lack of)
4. Members' Morale
5. Frequency and duration of drama meetings
6. Dissatisfaction for those who failed the audition

Solutions

1. Each department will have one CAS coordinator who is responsible for logging and recording hours. Organize service related activities – planning and carrying out drama activities child-care centres (in the community). Rebecca’s Children Society Project
2. Set mini deadlines to remind club members of their academic obligations. Organize or set aside days specifically to do research, go to the national library
3. Provide snacks and or drinks during meetings
4. Ensure that members have sufficient breaks. Have meetings that are official but casual i.e. full club drama activities perhaps monthly.
5. -
6. Those that have read the script broke into their production committees and started discussing plans.
i) Costumes- headed by Charleen
ii) Set- headed by Melvin
iii) Lights and sounds

Each individual committee recorded their minutes.

Drama Meeting for YEAR 4s and 5s

Date: 27th Oct, Friday
Time: 1000-1200
Venue: Dance Studio, located below the new CPA

Monday 23rd Nov: Drama Workshop

Venue: B301
Time:4.00 p.m. - 5.30 p.m.

There will be a drama session on Monday where Mr Ferd Quek will be conducting a 30min session where we'll get into the feel of drama. The production is supposed to aid in the formation of a strong club. Concerns on whether there is a club spirit being forged.Rushing into the production is going to slide us back down into the steep and slippery route of
The specific questions of concern were

1) Do the club members know the 3 directors well enough to know how you work?

The proposed action plan is conducting workshops by the 3 student directors Sun Meicen, Melissa Yeo and Reuben Ong. These acting workshops are meant to get the club to work together and have fun, at the same time, giving a general training in preparation for the auditions for the production. One is that this will ensure we do not ‘testing the actors before they are taught’ and ensure that everyone will have a fair chance at the audition. This will also give the directors a chance to ‘prove their merit’ to the other club members and to provide them an opportunity to work with each other.

6) Will auditions again segregate the club and some members will feel marginalized and not feel like they are a part of the production after the actors are chosen?
8) What is going to happen to the rest of the members who are not directly involved in the cast? How would the club serve them?
9) Are those not selected still going to have training and a stake in the club?

Auditions for the cast will be held on November 2nd 2006.

The Executive Committee has reached a consensus of opening this play to the existing Year 4 and Year 5 Drama club members.

Some issues were raised regarding the unfairness of this system especially when new Year 5s of 2006 join the club, they might feel that they are put in a disadvantageous position. This production, being the maiden production of our drama club, we want it to be by the drama club and not by external people joining the production. By ensuring that this is a purely club exclusive performance, it would further create our identity as a club. However, if we only open this to the year 5s drama club members we face 2 major problems, one is the lack of talent, two there is a propensity of risking further segregation within the club between the 2007 year 6s and year 5s. Therefore by allowing the year 4s to join the club and production early, it orientates them quickly and serves to build up the club into a cohesive unit of 2 levels working together harmoniously.
Now addressing the issue of the new comers of year 5s joining the drama club in 2007, they would immediately be slotted into the various production departments. This would give them valuable backstage experience which is part of a holistic drama education. They would have their chance to prove their worth and potential in acting in July 2007 Centrestage.

What has been decided

4 workshops will be held in a space of 2 weeks before the auditions.
They will be held on the 18th, 23rd , 27th and 30th of October
The duration of each session is estimated to be 1.5 hours
They will be conducted by the 3 directors
Year 4s are expected to join the workshops

An external outing to the Necessary Stage is currently being planned by Jordan and Rachel

The production will be opened to Year 4s and Year 5s drama club members only

A Drama camp exclusively for year 4 and year 5s drama club members is being planned by Luke and his committee. The committee has not been confirmed but a year 4 representative will be part of the committee. This is a fantastic opportunity for the Year 4s to get to know the year 5s. Date of the camp is not confirmed. Further details will be provided in the minutes of this meeting.

A club meeting cum rehearsal session will be held on Wednesday 18th October
The agenda:
Introduction of the entire production (summary)
Introduction of our plans + timeline
Introduction of the characters
Briefing and announcing their roles
Sharing our concerns with them

Screening of <<>> Characterization Club activity
- Members are supposed to note down pointers on the acting, comment on the acting as well as on the characterization of the woman. Those who have read the script must also attempt to make constant reference back to the play and the characters in the play.

*Mr Quek, sorry for this last minute request. Could u make an announcement for all Year 4 and Year 5 Drama Club members to inform them that there will be an extremely important drama club meeting on Wednesday 18th October in B301 at 3.00 p.m.

The Departed
A Review

The legendary Martin Scorsese, indubitably one of the most influential directors of the Post-War era, is back to doing what he does best, instead of New York where his renowned films of a similar theme, such as Mean Streets (1973), take place, we now can witness gangland activity in another venue, Boston. A remake of the Hong Kong movie Infernal Affairs (2002), the film has already garnered rave reviews and is currently at #1 in the U.S Box Office.

In the movie, two men, played by Leonardo DiCaprio (Titanic) and Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting), from opposite sides of the law are both undercover within the Boston State Police department and the Irish mafia respectively, but “violence and bloodshed boil when discoveries are made, and the moles are dispatched to find out their enemy's identities.”[1] The Departed proves to be a thrilling, not to mention intriguing encounter, with twists and turns within the plot. With a well-written screenplay, by William Monahan (Kingdom of Heaven), which seeks to portray the characters and the situations realistically while adding a pinch of humour to the storyline, the film is capable of keeping audiences at the edge of their seat as they follow the various absorbing scenes which lack any dull moments. Director of Photography Michael Ballhaus’ gliding camera and shadowy lighting, Production designer Kristi Zea's immaculate sets and Thelma Schoonmaker's meticulous, rhythmic editing of the film play significant parts in taking us into a world of darkness and fear brought about by the activities of the underworld. However, do not go in expecting something similar to Scorsese’s acclaimed film, Goodfellas (1990), as there is less of the ‘Mafia’ feel to the movie, as the constant fear of underworld power and “bump-offs” seem to take a different dimension altogether, despite earlier moments in the movie which seem to resemble actions witnessed in the aforementioned film.

The cast seemed to have been selected well, for the sake of Box-Office success and of course, to bring out the best in their characters, despite criticisms of DiCaprio’s portrayal of William Costigan, the undercover agent seeking to aid the Department in bringing Costello who is played by three-time Oscar Winner Jack Nicholson. DiCaprio’s ability as an actor is clearly displayed here, as the tense and at times cunningly pretentious Costigan helps heighten the moments of tension and also, the needed uncertainty the plot carries to keep the audience constantly captivated. Matt Damon also plays the complicated, and at times, vicious and unpredictable Colin Sullivan, to a large degree of satisfaction as feelings about his character can clearly be evoked from the audience, and this attempt in playing a character somewhat different from his previous roles, and one which seems to defy his boyish looks only proves his ability to tackle differing roles. Legendary actor, Nicholson, despite the expected possibility of him playing a role resembling his usual chesire cat, tough-talking characters, somewhat steals the show by bringing colour to Frank Costello’s character, which reveals inconsistent characteristics, and it would be little of a surprise to find parts of the audience liking his character, despite the psychopath and devil-incarnate synonymous with the role. The supporting cast also does a splendid job. Martin Sheen plays Captain Queenan, bent on putting an end to Costello’s activities, and the impeccable Sheen, does a wonderful job bringing out the wisdom and kindness associated with the character. Mark Wahlberg’s character, which would prove a polar opposite of Sheen’s, despite them working together in the same Department, is well brought out by the actor, as he does a commendable job. Alec Baldwin was excellent in his role and the other supporting characters, be it members of the Force or Costello’s men, play a less noticeable, yet important part in elevating the movie’s brilliant plot, as proven in the success of Infernal Affairs. Credit must be given to Vera Farmiga, a relative newcomer selected by Scorsese ahead of possible choices such as Kate Winslet, who did a spectacular job as she plays the most conspicuous role of a woman, in a film dominated by the actions and decisions of men.

Scorsese is certainly back to his best. With this film, he has shown that he is still capable of, arguably, topping his previous works, and appealing to the new generation of moviegoers as well. For now, forget Raging Bull (1980), Taxi Driver (1976), Casino (1995), and his other critically-acclaimed films, for The Departed will prove to be equally indelible and will surely go down as one of Scorsese’s best works.

[1] Internet Movie Database - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0407887/

Upcoming events for the week

Wednesday
i) Briefing for all who are interested to audition for the roles + Registration for the audition (basically just record names and class so that we can immediately schedule them or slot them in audition time slots)

ii) Screening of movie 8 Women (especially helpful with characterization of female roles in black comedy. A social worker will then reiterate the message and there will be a quiz at the end. The total duration of the entire activity will be 45 min.

What we have to do
We will be provided with a small budget (unspecified). We are supposed to come out with an original script and perform a 10-15 min skit on sexual abuse. The target audience’s age ranges from 7-12 years old. Therefore language must not be too complex.

Problems
The activity is usually from 10-11 a.m., or 12.30 p.m. There is a risk of missing curriculum time.

Other possibilities
Preschoolers – puppets /storytelling
Age group 5-6 years old.

Attendance Meeting 03/06
Name
1. There were initial suggestions to localize the setting so that audience can relate more to the play. However, after much discussion, it was decided that we should keep it as universal and as generic as possible and minimize the changes made. Vulgarities such as ‘damned’ and ‘bloody’ were censored. The ‘Buddha’ figure that broke had to be change to a vase due to concerns of religious sensitivity. When you ask you must believe and not doubt . A man who doubts should not think he will receive anything from. He is a double minded man unstable in all he does.
2. Whether He tells you a YES or NO or NO COMMENT, use the wisdom that he has given you to Make a Decision in Faith.
(considering your priorities and responsibilities)

Let your Yes be Yes, and No be No.
God will not make Decisions and choices for you.
Put much thought to it and commit your decision to him in prayer

Reservations
Not as Man plans.. But as God wills

We are merely masters of the effort, and not accountable for the success of the play.
The play could succeed just as likely as it could fail – But God is in control
Don’t feel Inadequate because this is a learning process- it is inevitable that we make mistakes- Admit it and learn from it

To give your best
When you are in it…
It will never be smooth sailing
Don’t quit! Persevere.

When you have any problems, share. We’ll support you in any way we can. Don’t bottle everything up inside.

We are a family

Registration Form – provided to indicate their interests as well as details

Production Timeline (Refer to file or blog)

Introduction of plot and characters of play Black Comedy
- Brindlsey
- Carol
- Colnel Mackett
- Harold
- Miss Furnival
- Clea
- Schuppanzigh
- George Bamberger

Refer to blog for more details

Theatre- Discussion: what performance to watch

Drama blog: theindependentstage.blogspot.com

Attendance Executive Committee meeting 01/06
Name
1 Reuben
2. Issue remains unsolved lol.
Creation of a drama pledge – Taking of this pledge will be led by Chairman on Wednesday
Frequency of Exco meetings – when there is a need. Flexible
Accountability – Everyone knows each other’s responsibilities so everyone is accountable to everyone. Email will be used.
Vision – after a lengthy debate, still have yet to come out with a suitable one main words are – commitment and passion. Members are suppose to go back and brainstorm
Confirmation of theme verse from Colossians 3:23
Training- Proposal done by Jordan and Rachel was reviewed by the committee. A good proposal.

However, there was a lengthy discussion regarding several issues. All agreed that this training would be a general one and not merely an acting workshop. Issues such as the speakers for these workshops were discussed. Some suggested that we could invite AC drama seniors to conduct a workshop for free (considering it as a favour). Others argued that they would not do a good job if they are not paid, moreover if there is no proper syllabus, the participants would not be learning anything thus wasting their time. A thought that peers could conduct the training was vehemently protested against. Firstly, there would be a problem of carrying out the activity efficiently. Two, it would mean more work for the peers. Some sessions could be conducted by peers. But those should be as few as possible. Another issue regarding the commitment of the participants was raised. There were queries regarding the commitment and enthusiasm of the club members toward this activity. Therefore a suggestion is to include several questions in the registration form inquiring how often the participants would like to spend per week on these activities. Another suggestion raised was that after major productions, mini-productions such as skits or performances for the people in the community should be used as a practical way of direct application of what participants learn in their training sessions. In other words, as they learn the theoretical aspect of drama, they immediately practice it by preparing for these mini projects. The different age groups that they perform to would have to be taken into consideration, and thus it would necessarily be good training. However, this would have many implications. One is that we are showcasing to the public or to the community half past six performances. Two, is that it might be a logistical nightmare as such. Three, it might be crushed under the weight of its own ambitions. Some disagreed and preferred that trainings should revolve around drama activities that are fun and enriching. Others thought that trainings without a purpose would seem unnecessary. A member suggested a feedback form to survey the interests of the drama population which will be changed to an extended registration form to be given out on Wednesday. Everything will remain status quo until the processing and evaluation of the forms. Trainings will only be conducted when there are no productions. They will never be held concurrent to a school production
A forum has been set up but will be REVAMPED and UPGRADED with a face LIFTas decided after the ELECTIONS.) The function of the forum is obviously obvious and it would be for discussion and sharing of ideas. The upgrading would be headed up Rachel, and the maintenance of this forum will be by our current webmaster, Dale
A g-mail account will be set up for drama by Luke
A blog will be set up by Jordan and it would serve to as a place for announcements, reflections as well as minutes. What is to be on the blog:
The constitution, logo, structure, production timeline, announcements, minutes
This slew of measures is done to win the support of Year 5 drama population
and to improve communication.

12. The blog hopes to bring out the drama spirit in all the members of the IB Drama Club and for members to share their ideas concerning drama to other members and to the school as well! Entries should therefore be drama related.

Yesterday was also the first external drama performance some of us drama members attended as well. It was an ACJC DEP (drama elective programme) put together performance, where students were performing for their final year exam. There were 6 groups with 4-5 students in each group and all 6 plays each group had put up were rather abstract in nature. However, the themes in all 6 plays were very clearly brought out. Somehow, each of the 6 plays reminded me of a pink floyd song.

The first play dealt with the themes of loneliness and time. Marooned

The second play which I felt was poorly done was about some mad guy who killed his father. Hey You

The third was supposedly a play concerning choices and thier consequences, though I felt that it was more of a play about communication. Keep Talking

The play following the intermission dealt with social sterotypes and the idea of taking risks. Another Brick in The Wall

The fifth play which was also poorly done was concerning love and betrayal in a corny teenage mix. Wish You Were Here

The last play, which in my opinion was the best of all 6, was a play concerning God. It was enjoyable if you knew the Bible verses mentioned in the play and could relate the context of the verses to the play just as Rebecca said. The Great Gig in the Sky

All in all, the performances on a whole were pretty good. They are after all ACJC. It did not require much brain work from me to grasp the rather abstract themes, though I find it quite sad that all 6 plays were rather dark, characteristic of post-modernism. It's just not my type and I don't like it.

It is also quite surprising to see that Junior College students could put up such good abstract styled drama performances. The first play was rather lyrical and I'll try and see if I can procure a copy of the script for viewing so people can actually understand what I've been typing about.
